i'm using fc3 with kde. I got an error starting kde that /dev/dsp didn't exist. So i created it:

mknod -m 666 /dev/dsp c 14 3

Now I get an artsmessage :

device can't be opened for playback ( Permission denied)

/dev/dsp permissions are rw-rw-rw-.

Any suggestions?

Check for sound drivers loaded with /sbin/lsmod | grep snd, if anything is returned, then you have indeed drivers loaded. My guess, however is that you don't have any driver loaded, and hence the device was not created by udev.
