You haven't indicated how or why you have determined that it's a kernel
issue. 

If you think that's the case, the first thing that I would do is to
custom compile a vanilla kernel 2.6.10 from kernel.org. If you are
unfamiliar with the process, it's really much simpler than it sounds.

On your machine, the process (including setup) should be less than 30
minutes.

Do you have any unusual hardware?

Have you previously posted a lspci -v?
