ASCII DEL is a backspace by default handling and by function of that
keycode.

_Each_ user has a configuration file that defines key mapping so there
is a file somewhere in $HOME that stores those values.

It seems from your description that something has caused an incorrect
value to be mapped to the del key.

I do not know the exact file, but surely someone on this list can
provide that data.

If that is happening only on the terminal, it can be edited from the
gnome terminal menu "edit - profile - default - compatibility". Mine is
set to backspace -> ASCII DEL, delete -> escape sequence. There also
is a button to reset options to defaults.
