I have a dell dimension 3000 on which fedora 3 works, however there is
no sound. Would Dell have needed drivers do you think? Or maybe
something else is missing? Sound card is integrated on the motherboard;
during Fedora install the sound test worked ok. But there is no sound
from cds or movies.

I have a Dell 2400 and had the same problem. Dell did not install the analog signal cable between the CDROM and the motherboard and apparently the Linux cdplayers etc use the analog signal. Cables are avialable at Frys etc for less than $5.

XMMS will play cds using a digital interface. No analog cable required.
