AFAIK there are no makers of high-end 3D cards that support open source, the only ones with OS support are ones several generations old from ATI and some "Entry Level" boards. If all you are interested in doing with the card is run older applications then that is fine. If you are running heavy 3D modeling applications and current games, then your choices are nVidia and ATI. My personal experience the past two years nVidia has had better performance and fewer OOPSs of the two binary-only drivers. If I could get open source support for the ATI X-?00 series with decent performance and that supported most of the features of the card (add in VIA/S3 allowing the DRI developers to use S3TC) then I would buy ATI.
