to do this, you need to use IMAP service (dovecot makes sense).

Since it's mbox, you can always to a one time copy/cat process to a
folder that Thunderbird can deal with...

cp /var/spool/mail/user $HOME/.mozilla/default/salt_goes_here/Mail/Local
\ Folders/

and the next time you launch Thunderbird, it should pick it up
