something like this:
Address:192.168.0.45
Hostname: windowsbox.mydomain.com
Alias: windowsbox

ie an IP address, a long (fully-qualified) hostname, and a short hostname that
you wish to use to access the windows box, instead of either the numerical
address or the long version.
This is usually the bit before the first dot in the long name, but it actually
can be anything you wish.

this should write a line in /etc/hosts like this...
192.168.0.45 windowsbox.mydomain.com windowsbox
