Why do I need pcmcia-cs?

"User-level daemon and utilities for using PCMCIA devices on Linux."

My computer has nothing to do with PCMCIA, and I'd presume that's something 
that the hardware probing can detect. So why was this installed in the first 
place, and why shouldn't I s***can it?
