It does not follow conversational speech. Top posting was started by a couple of Windows programs back in the days of the LAN mailers (before most people were on the Internet). In theory, the best way to post is inline. That way the question and answer stay in line with one another. It just follows the way people talk. I probably should not have made the Jeopardy crack, but I guess my "smart ass"-ness is already out there for all to see.
