Add a bit for the card's internal usage, and you can just nicely fit that into 1 MB if you have 8 bit colour, or 4 MB if you have 32 bit colour. Besides, the numbers are fairly "round" in decimal: they're both multiples of 32, and exactly half-way between 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 960. Now 1280 x 1024, *that's* a strange setting. I never did understand what a 5:4 ratio was doing among all those 4:3 ratios...
