For future reference, you may want to look into switching from yum/up2date (which I am not fond of anyway) to the apt packages from http://dag.wieers.com. Then install synaptic (http://www.nongnu.org/synaptic/index.html). I think this will give you the type of user interface that you are really looking for. It sounds like you are trying to explore Linux and that is cool. One of the great things about synaptic is that you can really see a clear list of packages, search for stuff, install and uninstall all in one simple to use tool.
