I see that the docbook-utils package includes docbook2ps. Sounds
promising.
I read the man page on docbook2ps, and it indicates that there should also
be a docbook2pdf, but that doesn't appear to actually be in the package.

Next I try "docbook2ps usb.tmpl", thinking that I will be able to run the
Postscript output through ps2pdf.

Use docbook2ps, then ps2pdf.

As you will observe if you actually read my message, I *did* try that. docbook2ps is not actually producing any Postscript output for me, but rather a .tex file.

Well, for me it produces a suitable .ps file. Following a succesful ps2pdf run everything looks quite nicely in xpdf.

If docbook2ps was doing the right thing, I'd be able to view the formatted
file. Though I still suspect there must be some easier approach.

Can't really get any easier than this:

[mrsam@commodore doc]$ grep DOCTYPE makealiases.sgml
<!DOCTYPE refentry PUBLIC "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook V3.1//EN">
[mrsam@commodore doc]$ docbook2ps makealiases.sgml
Using catalogs: /etc/sgml/sgml-docbook-3.1-1.0-24.cat
Using stylesheet: /usr/share/sgml/docbook/utils-0.6.14/docbook-utils.dsl#print
Working on: /home/mrsam/src/courier/courier/doc/makealiases.sgml
Done.
[mrsam@commodore doc]$ ps2pdf makealiases.ps makealiases.pdf
[mrsam@commodore doc]$ xpdf makealiases.pdf &

I could, of course, try a DocBook V4.0 DOCTYPE, if you insist, but I don't expect to see any different results.
