iwconfig file update question

I've looked at the man for iwconfig, but could not find an answer to this question:

When I use iwconfig to update wireless parameters, I'm "assuming" there is a file that gets updated somewhere. Is this an ASCII file that can be directly edited? Or, is iwconfig updating a binary file somewhere on the system?
