And from what you write your aim is, you will need to manually patch the sources. http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/fc3/x86/ There you find a description about handling the kernel SRC.RPM. You install this source package as other RPMs and you will find the content then under /usr/src/redhat. I highly recommend to build an RPM build environment for a mortal user, rather than compiling and RPM building as root.
