If you're lucky, you can just treat the modem as any other DHCP ethernet connection -- configure it normally, activate it, and go. More likely, you have to configure PPPoE. That's not terribly difficult to configure -- if you use system-config-network (on the Gnome menu, that's under System Tools -> Network), create a new device, and choose xDSL, and go from there. But personally, I generally find the least painless way is to get one of the router/firewall/switch boxes I mentioned. (And if you have a laptop too, you can get one with wireless as a bonus.) You can get 'em for, like, $50. Then, you can configure the actual DSL connection using the little box's web-based interface, and all of the computers on the network just use plain no-fuss DHCP. However, if you don't have an extra $50 and have no need for multiple computers to use the connection, the first option should be fine. -- Matthew Miller mattdm@xxxxxxxxxx <http://www.mattdm.org/> Boston University Linux ------> <http://linux.bu.edu/>
