a related note to this was that there were three different
implementations of this feature in Linux

two (suspend 1 and a fork of it called pmdisk) and a out of tree
change set (suspend 2)

the two in kernel implementations have merged recently and suspend 2
is being proposed for inclusion as a series of patches.

this is very likely going to improve the situation with suspend to
ram/disk esp with smp systems in a couple or revisions of the upstream
kernel
