Kindly describe what you mean by "embedded" as the term is not concise.

In my case I compiled my own kernel and switched things off that I didn't 
need or that had conflict with the application.

An example was to disable anything that created a VGA console since the
application uses the VGA hardware directly for application debugging info.

Another thing was to switch off anything that had to send mail, and to 
switch off mail-sending attributes to everything else.

Shell access is by putty from a windows platform or ssh from another Linux 
machine.
