Large files on USB hard disk

I can't write large files (700 Mb or greater) to attached USB hard disk 
on FC3.

I can write smaller files, but with larger files the system stops 
responding, ending the transfer to USB hard disk at about 20 Mb.

There is surely nothing wrong with the partitions on the hard drive, 
since the pratitions are recognized O.K. and when the drive is connected 
to the system via ATA cable everything is O.K.

Any ideas?
