in the Line "Modes" put your 1440x900 in the first position. The restart your X-Server. Worked for me all the time.

PS: On the subject of Laptops, does anyone know of a GNOME applet to display the battery level?
Click with the right mouse button on your taskbar, select "Add to panel" and then select the "Battery charge monitor"
