Samba and username map

Does anyone have any idea why with Samba 3.0.9 on FC2 I can use the (old 
samba 2.2) format:-

unixusername = windowsusername

in the username map. But when I build 3.0.9 on a RH7.2 system and run it 
I have to modify the username map to be

unixusername = domain\windowsusername

The security setting is "domain" and the smb.conf is the same on the two 
systems (except for the machine name).
