Indeed, it starts a new thread. A better option is subscribing to individual messages, sorting them in a separate folder using Thunderbird's thread view, and deleting often.
Or read it on the newsgroup at gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.general. I realize it isn't for everyone, and I generally prefer mailing lists, but for these really high volume lists, reading them in the newsgroup (using Thunderbird) seems ideal for me.
