I've been a long standing fan of Enlightenment. I use both "viewports" and "deskop" flavors of virtual desktops and Enlightement seems to handle them the best I've seen. I used Sawfish for a while and then the Gnome people decided they knew best how everyone should work and the "viewports" mode went bye-bye when they went to Metacity. I guess it's back now, if you know where and how to hack on it, but I haven't had much luck making it work and Enlightenment seems to work fine for me... Until recently, that is, for one particular program... I got rather badly burned a couple of weeks ago when I suddenly discovered that "full screen mode" for my presentations under OpenOffice Impress would only give me a postage size window, instead of full screen. This occured after some of the updates during October (haven't tracked down the guilty party YET) for Fedora Core 2, but the problem also exists in Fedora Core 3. Took me days to figure out that it seems to be something with Enlightenment and (I think) Imlib2 and some recent X updates. Prior to October, I was having no problem with Impress and full screen presentations. Now, it no workie. Use a different window manager, and Impress gives me full screen properly. Switch back to Enlightenment, and I get a postage stamp. Not the sort of thing you want to discover 10 minutes before delivering a talk... :-( Yes, I should know better to always check... Grrr... This is on a Dell D600 laptop with a Radeon Mobility 9000 video system. I haven't tested it on any of my other systems with other video controllers yet. The Radeon is a peculiar beast, especially when X tries to figure out multiheaded modes (and FC3 has a serious bug there, but that will be the subject of a different messages shortly). > Ed > -- > Edward H.
