There are a *LOT* of dependencies on the right version of glibc, and unless you really, really know what you're doing, you're going to be spending some time in rescue mode trying to boot your system, and then spending a lot of time trying to debug which applications work and which you broke. In short, it's far easier to upgrade your system to a version that has the glibc you need than it is to upgrade glibc and fix the apps.
