phpMyAdmin+MySQL

was trying to make phpMyAdmin work on a FC2 box but I get the following
error:

cannot load mysql extension

I'm using the latest FC2 php package (4.3.8-2.1) and I think that isn't
compiled with the mysql extension - correct? If this is the case how can
I change that?
