One strange thing I have noticed with the AC-97 card I have is that I had problems playing files like wav files on the pcm 1 channel, but as soon as I turned pcm 1 down to 0 and pcm 2 up to 75 or better the wav files played fine. Not sure what the deal is, but something is screwed.
