conversations are supposed to be trimmed to save space (but cut apart the original conversation). The point was to make the email as small as possible while allowing the respondent to comment on the email.
As a friend of mine says: putting your new text at the beginning just because that's where your cursor is, is like shitting your pants because that's where your asshole is.
This allowed for emails to be *less* than a page, which in turn made it easy to read *EITHER* way.
