Thanks all,You might want to take a look at jedit too. It is a very fine programmer's editor, and not only for java. I use it for perl scripts and XML data.
I start with the bluej editor and take a little more time learning Eclipse.

Hi all, I am just starting to play with Java. What parts of the huge Eclipse project to I need to download to get the basic IDE and begin learning?
You can get eclipse via apt or yum, if you use the jpackage repository, this is probably the easiest way, especially if you might want to upgrade it in future.
