I hoped for several answers (all them supposing it was possible to upgrade from FC1 to FC3, although I was conscious of "the weird of the situation". Please, feel free to check it in my "popular-lucky" mail, named "Ways to upgrade to FC3 and expected results (Newbie looking for answers)" Thu, 11 Nov 2004 03:11:57 +0100 ...not the first one of here (I didn't start this thread) (Anyway, despite it wasn't the true reason of my mail, I'm glad to make all you laugh ...) > If you want a > short answer: don't try to upgrade from FC1 to FC3. Thanks. I'll cut and paste this (for me it would be really enough coming from a guy that I KNOW that very possibly are in right) into my mail to answer to myself. > If you want the long > version: read the list posting from over the last days. Stop here! As I said before, I had read the release notes before. Also read again. The only one reference I found was (copy & paste): -------------------- "There have been issues observed when upgrading Red Hat Linux 7.<x>, 8.0, 9, and Fedora Core 1 systems running Ximian GNOME. The issue is caused by version overlap between the official Red Hat Linux RPMs (or the ones from the Fedora Project) and the Ximian RPMs. This configuration is not supported. You have several choices in resolving this issue: 1) You may remove Ximian GNOME from your system prior to upgrading to Fedora Core. 2) You may upgrade your system, and then immediately reinstall Ximian GNOME. 3) You may upgrade your system, and then immediately remove all remaining Ximian RPMs, replacing them with the corresponding Fedora Core RPMs. You must resolve the version overlap using one of the above choices. Failure to do so will result in an unstable GNOME configuration." --------------------- Both release notes -FC2 and FC3- says exactly the same at this point (above). My FC1 system was then a fresh install, so I am running Gnome 2.4 (I don't know if this version is Ximian Gnome or not, as I don't know how has been the evolution of the Gnome Desktop understood in terms of maintainers/developers groups, I have the DEFAULT Gnome desktop for FC1, so I guess I don't have the Gnome Ximian version, do I ?? In this case, I wouldn't have any reason to worry about with the above paragraphs...? > If you are a Linux/Fedora freshman then do a fresh install. I've been using FC1 for several months, as I said at the top of my forgotten-new-thread mail. > If you have > quite some experience and are able to debug things for most parts > yourself, then with a full backup in background you might risk an > upgrade and fix non working things afterwards. It would be too much... > > Alexander > Thanks Regards
