I had a hell of a time getting my CD writer to work with Fedora Core 2. For anyone else who runs into this problem, the answer was
DO NOTHING
The installation procedure and kernel handle the CD writer automatically with no problems or manual configuration. I tried to manually insert the 'hdc=ide-scsi' line that I have always needed to add manually in the past, into grub.conf, Big mistake. Confuses the hell out of everything, and renders the CD writer totally unusable.
And congradulations to whoever finally got these things to configure right automatically. Its about time. This was the sort of thing which really turned off less knowledgable users who tried to use linux. The first time I tried to put a CD writer on a linux system, I had to download driver source and build a custom slackware kernel with the ide-scsi stuff built in (slackware 5.0 I think)
