Fedora Core 2 Upgraded Kernel Won't Boot

Help me Obiwan Kenobi

I've just built a new system, and installed FC2 on it.

Installation went smoothly in general, although I ran into a problem when I updated the kernel. I can't get any kernel to boot other than the kernel that was installed during the initial system installation ( kernel-2.6.5-1.358 ).

I'm not booting with quiet or rhgb flags, and I don't use XP or anything else on this box, and no other OS has ever been installed on any of this hardware.

I went through the last several thousand posts on gmane and didn't find anyone with a similar problem.

Running yum update updated my whole system, including the kernel which went to "kernel-2.6.8-1.521", however when I reboot I can't get 2.6.8 to boot. 2.6.5 still boots fine. I compiled my own kernel (I'm no guru but I'm not a noob - been doing Linux since the 0.99 kernels) but that didn't boot either. Kernel's freeze immediately before the uncompress message starts, right after grub prints out what it's arguments are (kernel, initrd). I can get the specifics if they are useful.

The config below is somewhat complicated (software RAID + reiserfs), but I reproduced the same problem with a plain install to /dev/hda with just ext3.

Hoping someone has some ideas?

Thank you in advance,

- Dave
