I had the same problem.
It's gone away when i had run kmix as root.
I thinks that fc2 as some problems whith permissions: if you go in /dev all sound devices are of proprerty of the first account that has logged...
I seem to have the problem now that kmix will not start as # or $ (here we go again) I looked at /dev/snd* permissions,they were all [crw------ david:root] except for sndstat [root:root] I think thats ok
so I'll keep trying
