Ok, here's some more on this.

The disk activity is occuring on / and /home, but _not_ on /boot.
(These are standard ext3 partitions on a standard FC 1 machine, /
and /boot are on one drive, /home on the other.)

The continuous disk activity consists of writes (no reads) and is
very regular, at exactly 0.40 w/s (according to iostat) -- which
looks like a daemon doing something every 2.5 seconds.

Does anyone have any idea what part of GNOME this could be?
(What's the easiest way to find the files and processes invovlved?)
