I booted > with knoppix and can see /etc/x11/xorg.conf but unable > to edit due to permissions. at the grub boot screen choose to edit the kernel line and tag a 3 on the end. will boot you into runlevel 3 (text mode) as root using nano or similar edit the conf and then when happy try startx.
