Well, how much of it all is kernel drivers? Like the nic would be,
etc... I would have no idea of things like thermal control, if they'd
be in the kernel, perhaps they are. I'd hate to start right off the
bat with FC1 as its now no longer supported.
Thermal control, et al, is handled by kernel modules such as power, fan,
etc. along with the ACPI and APM stuff.
FC1 is still supported, but via the Fedora Legacy group instead of the
main Fedora Project group. I'm still using it.
I'm guessing I'll just have to bite the bullet, install FC2 and see what
happens. We already have a DL320, and the fans at full speed (at start
of boot) are bruttle on the ears.
That's "brutal". I'm running FC2 on a variety of platforms (including
an Opteron) and I'm happy with it.
Somehow I see this as an ongoing problem. Those of us who don't need
the fully supported Suse or RH Enterprise versions, and are looking for
low cost alternatives (I'm in public education - where there is NO
money) will have these kind of problems with drivers.
Actually, driver support is pretty good under both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels.
If you really have trouble with drivers, contact the driver authors or
contact the hardware maker to get them to support the Free Software
movement. I've been on TI's butt for years because of their lack of
Linux support for their wireless cards. I think they're starting to
wake up with Linux' inroads onto the desktop.
