xfig fonts

Hi Folks,
I use xfig to create some figures (actually, team rosters for volleyball tournaments). I layed out the lines a long time ago, and I fill in name with Text mode. If a name doesn't fit, I usually decrease the text fontsize until it does. Since RH9, I started to notice that the text being displayed doesn't actually change size on the screen unless I change it by at least 4 point sizes. This is annoying since I can't tell which if the four settings is the one I need to use. I think that this is some kind of a font scaling issue, but I'm not sure where to look.
I'm trying to use the NewCenturySchlbk-BOLD font at 24 pts.
But, I don't see any change until I reduce the size to 20 pts.
But (again), I do see the result when I print the file!

what I think are pertenant excerpts from my config files:
xorg.conf:
        FontPath "unix/:7100"

        Load "type1"
        Load "freetype"

xfs config file:
catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/Type1,
        /usr/share/fonts/default/TrueType,
        /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1,
        /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/msttcorefonts,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttf,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF

All ideas gratefully accepted!
