I'd strongly recommend that you back up all of /etc, with all subdirectories, anyway. After a reinstall, you'll probably want to get settings out of your previous install. There isn't that much of /etc, and useful settings are scattered throughout (if they were use*less* settings, they'd probably be replaced by a compiled-in default). On top of that, you may have to back up /var/spool/mail and user home directories to back up the mail itself.
