No, he did it properly.

No, "dexter" is his realm and not the username. The username is
"neuromante". If not giving the realm with parameter "-u" (or -u DOM 
use DOM for user domain, according to the help), the hostname will be
choosen automatically. You can't enter users to the sasldb(2) without a
realm.

His sasldb2 worked once he had corrected the wrong permissions on the
file.
