This is all reasonable advice, as long as it isn't taken as an excuse to jump 
feet-first into abusing newbies who don't follow it. One of the main 
functions of lists like this is to educate people, as well as assist them - I 
really don't believe for a second that people ask here because they can't be 
bothered to figure out how to do something themselves.
If by asking on the list they can be politely pointed to solutions they've 
missed I would hope this would encourage people to look for themselves first 
in future. And then ask on the list when they go to google and find 450000 
matches for their query which don't apply to their exact situation (please 
don't tell me this has never happened to you!)
Admittedly there will always be people who do not take friendly advice but 
they are by no means in the majority, and abusing people who don't 
necessarily know how to find their own answers is counter-productive to say 
the least.
