Actually, I followed Allen Winter's instructions.  I did the entire
thing in Console (as su).  (If you want, I can send these instructions 
back to you over the net..)
It took me three tries, but I eventually gor it to work.  I used my
regular sign-in name and password.  These worked just fine.  The onlt
problem I had was with Sending (but not receiving) email in Evolution.  
I needed my Verizon ID (not my sign-in name) to send email. I called
Verizon tech support to find out what it was. The only exceptional thing
I found was in sending email.  Everything else was run of the mill.  


The settings are:

POP & SMTP

and the addresses are

incoming.verizon.net & outgoing.verizon.net
