Actually, after doing some more careful attempts (and _many_ reboots =)) I mapped the problem more precisely: - using stock 2.6.8-1.521 kernel with nvidia video drivers _doesn't_ seem to trigger the problem (previous attempts were poisoned by concurrent attempts to use nvidia's sound drivers which are known to be buggy) - as expected, compiling kernel by hand using configs/kernel-2.6.8-i686.config also seems to be stable (BTW: what is the reason for the lack of a athlon config file?) I will now try to gradually tweak the original kernel-2.6.8-i686.config to my personal settings and try to determine what breaks X.
