I had no problem other than default screen size.

lspci | grep ATI
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 Lf
[Radeon Mobility 9000 M9] (rev 01)

lsmod | grep rad
radeon                113669  2


This module comes with the kernel.
