As others have indicated, transcode is the tool. But I don't think it's for the faint of heart... If you find you need a gui, And those .avi files are from a dvd, you can try dvd::rip. I got it from Dag's repository. It takes a little getting used to, but I think it's easier to learn to use than transcode. It can easily burn vcd cd(s) a dvd. But be aware of copyrights and other laws that make it hard to legally back-up commercial dvds... perl-Video-DVDRip-0.50.18-3.1.fc2.dag.src.rpm Summary : Graphical DVD ripping tool based on transcode Description : dvd::rip is a Perl Gtk+ based DVD copy program built on top of a low level DVD Ripping API, which uses the Linux Video Stream Processing Tool transcode. - -- | --- ___ | <0> <-> Joe (theWordy) Philbrook | ^ J(tWdy)P | ~\___/~ <<jtwdyp@xxxxxxxx>> ############################################################## # You can find my public gpg key at http://pgpkeys.mit.edu/ # ############################################################## -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFBMwKVRZ/61mwhY94RAjYkAJ0SKej3YmGJmxoXWySo60Wa+tQIZgCgyKL5 qLE7qEs/kBDCjEigXDlaoyE= =R+FF -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
