PCMCIA activates the device, so there should be no need to do it manually.
What does ifconfig say after you boot?


Perhaps commenting out the line :
alias eth0 xirc2ps_cs
in /etc/modprobe.conf is necessary to avoid conflict with pcmcia socket driver.


Do that and either reboot, or try
rmmod xirc2ps_cs
service pcmcia restart
