If you do such things, a general tip: in one terminal let run "tail -f
/var/log/messages" and in a second one run the command. While executing
the command you will see in the terminal with the messages log file
activity.

No, then the module will not be loaded. You will set

alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx

in the /etc/modprobe.conf file. And while the module is loaded you
recreate the initial ram disk image with mkinitrd. The ram disk image
file is to be replaced under /boot/. Then you can reboot and the module
is loaded at start time automagically.
