I was running 2.6.7-1.494.2.2, no problem with the on board lan at
eth0. Then with 2.6.5-1.358 every time I reboot it adds another eth01,
eth02 etc. then it gags on all the entries and won't use eth0. Any
ideas?

Any special reason why you downgraded to an older kernel?
