new kernel adds eth0

I was running 2.6.7-1.494.2.2, no problem with the on board lan at
eth0.  Then with 2.6.5-1.358 every time I reboot it adds another eth01,
eth02 etc.  then it gags on all the entries and won't use eth0.  Any
ideas?
