I have the same video card on my laptop. The normal X setup does not provide 3D support. Someone wrote a nice HOWTO on getting 3D support for these cards.
I'm attaching it in case you wanted to try it.

THanks for the attached doc. This let me test out open office anyway. I'll read up on this and see what improvements can be obtained by the 3D settings additions.
Of course, reading mail in 3D is not a major must for me. :-)
