ah. so you mean execute this in bash:

You left out the first line of the java.sh file!
--> JAVA_VERSION="j2re1.4.2_04"

vi /etc/profile.d/java.sh
---> then put in the content I showed you and save the new file
chmod 755 /etc/profile.d/java.sh
--> to make the file executive
