It's clear that you are not believing what people are telling you but GIMP is the killer application for editing graphic files. There is no other application on Linux that comes close to Photoshop on Linux - GIMP is the dude you are looking for. Perhaps you should be looking at a different graphic to get your confidence. The only thing that it seems to be missing is CMYK. As someone who has used Photoshop since version 1.0, let me assure you that GIMP is the real thing. It's possible that the image you are looking at only has a 256 color palette. Try 'View' menu - 'Info Window' to see what you are dealing with in terms of the original image.
