I'll try to explain, because at home I've a 56kb coal connection and I have to compile sources (I can find them on magazine's cds) very often, just not for masturbation ;-) If you try to compile mplayer with CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS optmizations (I did it, I didn't read the configure file till to the end..), you'll probably hear Great Lebowsky talkin' with Donald Duck' voice... I'm not joking!! In fact, Mplayer is very "smart" to recognize himself the hw where is going to be placed, and this fact is very well written at the end of the configure. So, it's better not to optmize it...
